Each year Brazosport Independent School District recognizes the leadership, service, and dedication of two campus principals as BISD’s Elementary and Secondary Principals of the Year. This year we honor Dr. Karen Matt from Madge Griffith Elementary School and Mr. Richard Yoes from R O’Hara Lanier Middle School as BISD’s 2017 Principals of the Year.
Dr. Karen Matt, a product of BISD, joined the Griffith staff as principal during the summer of 2013. She previously worked in Angleton ISD where she served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. Matt was also an elementary principal in Burnet Consolidated ISD. Dr. Matt stated, “I have the best job in the world! I’ve held their hands the first day of Pre- kindergarten and hugged their necks at graduation.” Dr. Matt earned her Associate of Arts from Brazosport College before completing her Bachelors at Midwestern State University and Masters of Education at the University of Houston - Victoria. She also earned a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies through University of Houston.
Mr. Richard Yoes took the lead at R O’ Hara Middle School in 2015 after serving as the Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction in Pasadena ISD. Yoes specialized in support for K-12 math, Middle and Intermediate campuses, and technology. His calling to work with students that need him has led him to R. O’Hara Lanier Middle School, where he is honored to lead the campus into a bright future. Mr. Yoes believes that all children can be successful, “every child, every class, every day,” With a background in STEM education and school improvement, Yoes is very excited about the great things happening on his campus as well as in all BISD schools. Mr. Yoes earned his Bachelors of Arts and his Masters of Education from the University of Houston.
